IMPORTANT NOTICE - effective 11/14/08 We regret to inform you that, due to budgetary constraints, the California Geological Library and Publications Desk in Sacramento will only be open to the public on Tuesday and Thursday between the hours of 8:00 A.M. to Noon; and from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. However, upon staffing availability, the public is welcome to make an appointment to access the Sacramento Library and Publication Desk for research and/or publications sales and education material. Publications are still available for purchase via telephone or facsimile orders, and our Menlo Park Publications Desk remains open to public visitation during the entire week. Under several different names, the California Geological Survey Library has been in existence since 1880 and has developed into an extensive collection of scientific and technical materials on Earthquakes, Engineering Geology, Environmental Geology, Geology of California, Geomorphology, Groundwater, Hydrogeology, Landslides, Mapping, Mined Land Reclamation, Mineral Resources, Mining, Seismology, Soil Mineralogy, Structural Geology, Tectonics, Water Resources and Volcanology.
The Library has over 100,000 books and reports, including CGS publications, various map collections, photographs, U.S. Geological Survey publications and periodicals. The Library is open to the public for reference and research. Materials may be borrowed through interlibrary loan only.
The Library is a designated State Earth Science Information Center (ESIC), under an agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey, tasked to respond to requests for earth science information.
The Library also maintains a Teacher Resource Center for the Earth Sciences - Grades K-12, with materials available for loan to California teachers.
